Note: Janet Sobel is a Ukrainian-American artist who immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, as a child in 1908. Self-taught, a housewife and mother, she began by painting figurative, naive-inspired works that gradually evolved into innovative abstraction. In 1945, she took part in Peggy Guggenheim's exhibition "The Women", and was the first artist to use the dripping technique popularized by Jackson Pollock (who was inspired by her work). It's only recently that she's been recognized for her pioneering role in Abstract Expressionism. Today, her works are exhibited in major museums such as New York's Museum of Modern Art.
Sobel overturned painting techniques by inventing all-over and dripping, covering the entire surface of her canvases (which she painted lying on the floor in her modest living room) with patterns, colors or drops of paint. She used materials of all kinds, including sand.
