Fred (Frits) KLEIN (1898-1990) - Lot 476
Fred (Frits) KLEIN (1898-1990)
Panoramic view of the Côte d'Azur - circa 1937
Oil on canvas signed lower right.
52 x 219 cm
In 1937, Fred Klein was commissioned to paint a fresco for the Pavillon de la Côte d'Azur at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Our Panoramic View is a project for this commission, showing a whimsical view from the Italian border to Saint-Tropez, via "postcard" localities: Èze-village, Cap Ferrat, Nice and its Promenade des Anglais, Cagnes and the bell tower of the Chapelle de la Protection (adopted village of Fred Klein, his wife Marie Raymond and their son Yves), Antibes, Cannes, Anthéor and its viaduct, Agay and the Golden Island, l'Estérel and its red rocks, Saint-Tropez, its bell tower and its beaches. This canvas was presented at the Palais de la Méditerranée the same year, during an exhibition of the artist's work. The final fresco was created by Klein with the help of Marie Raymond, based on the same principle of a large, fanciful panoramic view of the Riviera.
