Statue of Mangbetu style - Lot 362
Statue of Mangbetu style
Democratic Republic of Congo
Wood
H : 42,5 cm
Statuette whose body is covered with a geometric network of chiselling. The characteristic high headdress reinforces the elongation of the skull, a sign of beauty among the Mangbetu. Among the Mangbetu, from childhood onwards, children underwent compression and elongation of the cranium, which was held tight by raffia ties. This is the ideal canon of the aristocracy.
