Kongo Style Olifant - Lot 346
Kongo Style Olifant
Democratic Republic of Congo
Wood
Height : 64 cm
This intricately decorated musical instrument is surmounted by a representation of a dignitary with a high headdress sitting on a throne. He is chewing munkwiza, a bitter root with supernatural properties. He wears a nkisi around his neck. The diamond-shaped side mouthpiece is pierced in the concave inner curve of the instrument. It corresponds to the wide-open mouth of the anthropomorphic figure with a high, rounded forehead, incised eyes and a blunt nose. Two lateral snakes. A decoration representing cowries is carved in low relief on an embossed background.
