Grebo style mask - Lot 328
Grebo style mask
Ivory Coast
Wood, pigments
Height : 67 cm
Stylized mask, built on a long vertical flat board. The sharp edge of the long nose divides the composition. On either side are the six pairs of tubular eyes. Symbolically, such a tenfold vision refers to the capacity of extra lucidity of certain beings, the holders of cults, the wearers of masks, who are also seers. This profusion of eyes made it possible to "watch" the fighters, but also to "strengthen" them to raise them to the status of valorous warrior.
