Statuette of Baule style - Lot 320
Statuette of Baule style
Ivory Coast
Wood
Height : 48 cm
This standing female figure has her hands placed on her belly (kunu) with a protruding navel (kôtua). According to the Baule expression, Bla yolè ngwan nyama, "the woman holds the cord of life". The features of the face are delicate: the superciliary arches meet at the birth of the right nose with hemmed nostrils, a small mouth stretched forward, and ears with a drawn pavilion. The body and face are punctuated by scarifications in relief.
