Songye style statue - Lot 178
Songye style statue
Democratic Republic of Congo
Wood, beads, metal
H 41 cm
This statuette belongs to the Belande style, which is characterized by the expressionism of the mouth accentuated to deliver important messages, but also by the large volume of the hairstyle and the feet in the form of huge snowshoes on a curved base. The gesture of the hands placed on the belly - a horn stuck in the navel - symbolizes his power of protection over the clan and the lineage.
