Baule style maternity hospital - Lot 321
Baule style maternity hospital
Ivory Coast
Wood, fabric
H : 40 cm
This maternity sitting on a stool displays a hieratic pose, the neck straight, the head with a serene face. She is giving a breast to her child on her lap, the latter grasping the other conical breast with one of her hands. The features of the face are delicate: superciliary arches meeting at the birth of the right nose with hemmed nostrils, small mouth stretched forward. The face, the long neck, and the back are punctuated by scarifications in relief.
