Reliquary figure of Fang style - Lot 274
Reliquary figure of Fang style
Gabon
Wood, raffia, copper
H : 24 cm
This reliquary figure represents a seated man, hands clasped on his chest holding a cylindrical vase. The expression of the hollowed out cordial face is intensified in the eyes, which are represented by two copper nail heads. The mouth, which is not outlined, is expressed by the forward projection of the lower face. This reliquary figure can be linked to the Southern Fang style among the different styles identified by Louis Perrois. The muscular masses are strongly marked, the short thighs are placed horizontally on calves with imposing volumes, the muscular arms are detached from the body.
