Baule style mask - Lot 230
Baule style mask
Ivory Coast
Wood
Height : 45 cm
This mask presents a discoid face surmounted by two bovine horns. The geometric facial features are characteristic, namely the eyes pierced in the shape of a drop of water, the pupils projected in high relief, and the rectangular mouth. However, this mask deviates from the "extreme stylization that only allows for the essential" that characterizes this type of mask. Indeed, more realistic elements such as the drawn nose, the forehead modeled in high relief, the small hemmed mouth, the scarifications, move away from the typical scheme of simplicity and purity of lines.
