Reliquary figure in the Kota Mahongwe style - Lot 105
Reliquary figure in the Kota Mahongwe style
Gabon
Wood, brass
H : 46 cm
This Kota-Mahongwe reliquary figure is characterized by the abstraction of its slightly hollow ogival head, punctuated by a crown bun. The face is plated with thin brass strips. The half-hemispherical cabochon eyes are very close to the sharp nose. The back offers a very elaborate brass ornamentation, in its center on a wide ridge is the miniature face of the effigy. The neck is prolonged by a swollen part, pierced by a diamond-shaped opening that allowed the effigy to be attached to the basket with ropes and strips of vegetable fiber.
