Baule style mask - Lot 81
Baule style mask
Ivory Coast
Wood
Height : 41 cm
On this mask, the ornament representing a peacock has no particular meaning, it is a purely decorative element.
The three semi-circles of the headdress that border the forehead of the face are synonymous with power and wealth.
The half-closed slit eyes are inflated and enhanced by semi-circular eyebrows. The small mouth is square. The forehead is outlined with a midrib, running from the cap to the aquiline nose with pinched nostrils. The serrations around the face show an influence from the neighboring Yaure.
The mask is pierced with fixing holes.
