Senoufo style mask - Lot 78
Senoufo style mask
Ivory Coast
Wood, pigments
Height : 41 cm
This Kpelie mask is topped by a crest representing a hornbill.
The elongated face is surrounded by wings marked with kaolin.
The sculptural dynamics are enhanced by the reliefs, the play of full and empty spaces; the almond-shaped eyes are enhanced by a strong arch of the eyebrows in the shape of a half moon, announcing the aquiline nose in the form of an inverted T. The fine protruding mouth reveals rows of teeth on which one can guess traces of kaolin.
